The Steam DECK.

by Daniel Rodil .

I'm all excited about the new Steam Deck. I love the fact that I will be able to play all my steam games in a mobile platform, and most of them are not very graphically intensive so they will certainly play well. Besides it reminds me of the PlayStation VITA, which is a platform I loved and loved developing for it. But what excites me the most about the Steam Deck is that it really is a Deck...

A Deck like in cyberpunk culture.

Since I was a kid I loved the idea of having a deck one day. I particularly remember the decks in Shadowrun, the pen and paper role playing game, and the Steam Deck resembles one of those. Hacking is definitely not my thing, I tried it when I started programming, but I suppose I'm too nervous to break the law, still the Steam Deck will remind of what it felt to think about being a hacker of the future.

Some would say that tablets and smartphones could do the same thing as a Deck, but having Linux or Windows, and being able to connect a normal mouse and keyboard makes the difference. The Steam Deck seems to come out of a cyberpunk story and I hope it will fulfill the sentiment.

I'm quite disappointed about the hardware of the last 20 years, I would have hoped it to be more like in 90s films, besides today's hardware is too forbidding, like a corporate, hipster version of what writers envisioned in the past. Probably I will use my Steam Deck just to play games on it, which is what it is made for, some of them from the 90s, and will seldom connect keyboard and mouse, but to finally have a Deck will be enough for me.
