Videogames in TV.

by Daniel Rodil .

As an adult, having time to play videogames is very scarce. There are hundreds of videogames that I've added into the when-I-have-time queue that the queue in itself has become cumbersome to think about, my backlog. One of the videogame franchises that I added into the backlog from an early age was Castlevania. It has been there for so long that for many years I actually forgot about, until...

A Castlevania series came to Netflix.

I didn't have much hope for it, as I am cautious of any adaptation, and I saw what they did Dungoens and Dragons and Assassin's Creed, but when I saw Warren Ellis was going to write the story I knew it was going to be a good one. We have seen 4 seasons now, with its ups and downs, but I feel it's way better than most fantasy-based series that are normally produced.

I like the fact that videogame culture is spilling out into other media, like music (as I wrote in a post before), with big productions, not just some crappy movie that makes no sense to the original videogame. I would like to see more entries from my backlog of unplayed videogames to be put into series so I can enjoy the setting and the story, without having to spend that much time.

The inverse has been happening for quite a while: Series and movies becoming more like videogames, scene and action-wise, which was a common feature in early 2010s action movies. Back then it was not achieved all too well, but a few weeks ago I watched “Sweet Home” and it feels like a videogame, especially the first episodes, with an amazing plot and great production.

I hope the videogame culture keeps spilling out into other media, with the quality that has been achieved lately, that way the backlog won't feel so cumbersome.
